Fostering Good Communication

1) Based on the article Up and Down, how can one foster good communication upward?
One can foster good communication upward firstly by ensuring that a straightforward and clear message is passed across.  One should conduct groundwork to understand the tastes and preferences of customers by thinking than a typical CEO and putting on the ‘real person’ hat.  Though the discipline of the framework is essential so that the managers and supervisors can understand what their expectations are; managers should endeavor in making the necessary investment of winning the employees first by telling stories and conversing in a way that relates to the core purposes and strategies of the company. In achieving out this goal, the use of 21st-century media such as blogs, tweeter, Facebook, etc., is very essential.
2)  In the article Up and Down the communications Ladder, Harriman (1974) identifies four ways to manage down. Name and describe 2 of them.
Know yourself by listening sensitively to what people talk about you. Judge yourself from the comments those you trust most make about you and be yourself by acting and behaving in a way that is most natural to you and other employees to avoid confusion when communicating.
 3)        The major communication mistakes managers make, according to the article by Robbins (2009) is by making controversial announcements without doing ground work first and underestimating the audience's intelligence.
 4)  In the TerraCog case, what should Emma Richardson do? Explain your reasoning.
Emma Richardson should do situation analysis and problem identification. She should identify what is offered and what is desired by customers to decide on a common goal and vision. Emma should recreate and redesign a new product and work with team leaders to address underlying agendas and encourage them the importance of launching a new product. She should act as a link between various departments i.e. sales, design, and development.
 5)  In the TerraCog case, what are the goals of the three departments: Sales, Production, and Design & Development?
The sales department is tasked with identifying, and satisfying customer needs e.g. suggesting product innovation while the design department is tasked with innovative and technical objectives e.g. achieving a good, quality product to meet customer needs. Development department links the two departments-sales and design- to ensure company's goals are met.
