How Technology and the Information Age play a role
in Leadership communication today.
Since the introduction of technology
and information age, the face-to-face communication that existed in the baby
boomers generation has been changed to
Communication and Information Technologies (CITs) that includes; instant
messaging and use of the web, and Computer Mediated Communication (CMCs). It has been observed that leaders have found
it easier to interact with members of the organization, suppliers and
customers. CMC has been proven to increase participation of group members,
reducing the hierarchies that previously existed in an organization. This makes
communication more effective, fast and efficient for the leader thus less time
is used to accomplish a certain task.
The great leaders like McDonough
& Scheid illustrate that the various generations display different ways of
communication. For one to blend the generations effectively, the following
should be considered. Since
traditionalists are hardworking and lack computer knowledge, it is essential
for one to design how follow-ups of customers will be dealt with. This can be
achieved through taking notes of the organizational activities in a detailed
way that will help in explaining to associates how the organization running.
This will increase the communication of the leader and the other employees. For
the baby boomer, it will be well if they are given a chance to choose what well
works for them; between the Millennial and Generation X. they thus act as a
moderator and he or she will be the most entrusted by the employees and
customers. The Xers are informed of technology hence using mail and a website
will be the best for the employees. Lastly, the Millennial work well with other
employees since they are more informed and have high communication skills. They
are also creative hence they can provide new ways of communication for the
organization. All these will ensure that there is effective communication that
does not conflict any of the generations.
