Drug trafficking has emerged as
one of the major social problems in the United States. The flow of illicit
drugs has intensified over time especially across the Mexican border. This
opening has provided an opportunity even for illegal drug traffickers from
other countries to pass through Mexico to enter the US for their outlawed
business practices (U.S Department of Justice, 2010). It is a global
illegal trade that entails cultivation, processing, distribution and the sale
of drugs prohibited by the law. Thus, this topic is important to highlight the
impact of illegal drug sale due to the violation of drug laws.
This research suffers the limitation uncooperative drug gangs thus demanding that the researcher must be part of the criminal practice to gather information. It is a highly dangerous situation that put researchers into unworkable and risky conditions that may jeopardize their lives once detected to be in pursuit of the criminal world (Sanchez-Moreno, 2015). Different from a prison setting, researchers should always realize in the criminal drug business they would be more of intruders. Arguably, unincarcerated drug criminals usually protect information on their outlawed activities since they consider the fact that they stood to lose much than those already imprisoned (Calderon, 2015). Thus, in the event of uncovering the researchers' undercover status, the criminals could decline the research or harm them in protest. Therefore, it is a volatile and uncertain field of study that could undeniably endanger researchers.
Statistics from the Drug Enforcement Agency indicate that the sale and distribution of banned narcotics nets an estimated 30,000 arrests annually in the United States of America. Remarkably over 25 percent of inmates in federal prisons were either caught while under the influence of drugs or in possession of the illegitimate substances (Sanchez-Moreno, 2015). An increasing number of causes of death in the US have been associated with drugs, leading an alarming precedence to the rising crime incidences that have led to mass killings. Notably, many HIV infections, motor-vehicle injuries, mental illness, violence and homicide cases have been as a result of illicit drugs in the streets (Calderon, 2015). The high rate of drug trafficking has continued despite strict drug laws. However rampant violation of the laws has been blamed for being the main cause of the deteriorating disaster, according to the U.S Department of Justice, (2010).
Drug trafficking remains an outlawed activity not only in the United States but the world over. Although most countries lack stern laws or adequate enforcement of the drug laws, United States has one of the strictest laws against drug trafficking (Calderon, 2015). However, extensive violation of these drug laws has been continuing exposing many young Americans to drug trafficking, use, and abuse. As a result, there is a wide and far-reaching effect of the drug menace to the Americans and citizens from adjacent countries especially the Mexicans notes Calderon (2015).
Drug trafficking has been associated with various problems in the world today. Research findings indicate that drug traffickers have caused massive harm to many families as they commit or influence the commission of several criminal and violent activities (Sanchez-Moreno, 2015). It has been an issue that has deprived many families of their loved ones, their hard earned income as well as sending many young citizens to mental incapacitations. Drug trafficking has been out of control mostly along the Mexico-US border leading to increased social crisis. Insecurity has been in the rise as drug barons engage in unprecedented wars in the fight for territorial powers and market influence. Many traffickers have increasingly violated the laws not only by selling the illegal drugs but also through violent murders of innocent people.
The importation and sale of controlled narcotics have led to immense and illegal immigration into the United States. Mostly, outlawed drugs emerge from outside the US.As such polarized border controls could be cited as one of the many routes for drug trafficking (Sanchez-Moreno, 2015). Although overland drug smuggling approaches remain rather consistent, drug traffickers have often shifted the routes to respond to the law enforcement measures and inter-cartel conflicts. Undocumented immigrants have been on the rise entering the US to work as couriers, notes Calderon (2015). In the process, they have been involved in the transport of narcotics and as well as other outlawed substances. Thus, drug trafficking has been a major contributor to the rise of illegal immigrants in the US.
This research uses participant observation method to gather information as it remains secure for the research due to the dangerous drug trafficking practices. Studying the participants while posing as part of the gang remains the most probable approach in the study of drug trafficking as it will ensure ease of data collection. On getting the requisite data, a qualitative analysis was carried out to ascertain the extent of drug trafficking menace and its impact to the Americans. In conclusion, drug trafficking remains dangerous practices that not only jeopardize the researchers but also the users of the drugs. Although, laws have been enacted against drug smuggling, traffickers have continuously violated the laws causing massive losses to many families in regard to insecurity, loss of life and economic losses.
