Acute Bronchitis and Treatment
Bronchitis, in general, is a disease
that causes the bronchial tubes to swell and produce mucus making a person
cough. There are two categories of bronchitis, but the most common one is acute
bronchitis that normally comes on quickly and recovers after 2 to 3 weeks. In
most cases, the healthy people who get this disease recover without any
problems. But in older people, children and some people with other health
problems like lung diseases it can be more serious. The acute bronchitis is
normally caused by a virus and sometimes by bacteria. Equally, acute bronchitis
can be caused by breathing in things that infuriates the bronchial tube like
smokes. A cough is the most common acute bronchitis symptoms. It is hacking and
dry at first but for after few days a cough brings mucus. The affected person
may also have low fever and feeling tired. Many people recover in 2 to 3 weeks,
but in some people a cough goes on for more than four weeks. If the signs get
bad such as shoulder pain, high fever, shaking chills or
breath shortness this can lead to pneumonia and this can be serious., Thus is
of great importance for a person to seek treatment once feels getting sicker.
Many people argues that the key
goals of treating acute bronchitis are to reduce symptoms to ease breathing. In
most cases people with acute bronchitis the doctor commends plenty of fluids,
enough rest and aspirins or acetaminophen in the case of adults to cure fever.
The antibiotics in treating acute bronchitis are usually not prescribed because
they don’t work against viruses that are the common cause of the disease. But
the doctor can prescribe antibiotics if he/she thinks the person has a
bacterial infection. The antibiotics are commendable for premature babies,
full-grown people above 80 years, people with weakened immune system which
maybe as a result of underlying condition and with those having history of
kidney, lung, heart or the live diseases.
